Is It Time to Change Jobs? 5 Questions to Help You Decide

professional thinking about changing jobs while working at her laptop

Many people stay in jobs they no longer enjoy—not because they love them, but because change feels risky. Others quit too quickly, hoping a new company will solve problems that actually follow them wherever they go.

If you’re wondering whether it’s time to change jobs, don’t rush your decision. Instead, ask yourself these five questions.

1. Am I running away from something—or moving toward something?

There’s a big difference.

Maybe you’re exhausted by your manager, frustrated with your workload, or simply bored. Those are valid reasons to explore other opportunities. But before making a move, ask yourself:

What am I hoping my next job will give me that I don’t have now?

The clearer your answer, the easier it becomes to choose the right opportunity instead of escaping into another situation that feels the same after a few months.

2. Have I already tried to improve my current situation?

Changing jobs is a major decision, but sometimes the real issue can be solved without resigning.

Consider whether you’ve:

  • Asked for different responsibilities.
  • Spoken openly with your manager.
  • Set healthier boundaries.
  • Learned new skills that could make your work more enjoyable.

If you’ve genuinely tried and nothing has changed, that’s useful information—not a failure.

3. Is this job affecting my wellbeing?

Every job has stressful periods.

But if you regularly feel anxious on Sunday evenings, struggle to sleep because of work, or constantly feel mentally drained, it’s worth paying attention.

Your career should challenge you, but it shouldn’t consume your entire life.

Ignoring these signs for months—or years—can make it much harder to recover your motivation and confidence.

4. Am I still growing here?

Growth doesn’t always mean promotions.

It can mean:

  • learning new skills,
  • taking on meaningful challenges,
  • meeting inspiring people,
  • feeling that you’re becoming better at what you do.

If every week feels identical and you’ve stopped learning, it may be time to ask whether your current role still fits the person you’re becoming.

5. If fear disappeared for one day, what would I do?

Fear is often the loudest voice in career decisions.

Fear of losing stability.
Fear of disappointing others.
Fear of making the wrong choice.

Imagine those fears disappeared for just one day.

What decision would feel obvious?

You don’t have to act on it immediately, but the answer often reveals what you already know deep down.

Final thoughts

Changing jobs isn’t automatically the right decision.

Sometimes the answer is to stay and improve your current situation. Sometimes it’s time to move on.

The important thing is to make the decision consciously—not out of panic, habit, or pressure from others.

If you’re feeling stuck and can’t see your situation clearly, talking it through with someone can make a huge difference. A coaching session won’t tell you what to do—but it can help you untangle your thoughts, identify what’s really holding you back, and make a decision you feel confident about.
